"From Order Taking to Menu Recommendations..." Smart Stores Evolving with Generative AI

"Recommend a menu suitable for two of us."

Located in Gwanyang-dong, Dongan-gu, Anyang City, this is a chicken specialty restaurant. When asked for menu recommendations from the AI in the table order system, a screen with options like chicken and beer, chicken and tteokbokki appears on the menu. It has filtered out only the menu items suitable for two people, as requested.

This is one of the flagship stores operated by the retail tech startup Next Payments, called 'N-Shop'. Next Payments started operating the versatile AI assistant 'MZZZ' utilizing OpenAI's ChatGPT API at N-Shop from March 8th.

The AI, 'MZZZ,' integrated into the table order system allows customers to place orders not only by voice, stating the menu item names, but also to receive menu recommendations based on the number of people and preferences. It also enables adjustments to detailed order specifications such as adding side dishes or changing options. Thanks to the generative AI, it can handle more complex requests than simple text-to-speech (TTS) technology. This means that even elderly or digitally challenged individuals who are not familiar with kiosks or table order systems no longer have to struggle with touch screen interfaces.

One of the notable features is that it supports any language supported by ChatGPT without the need for separate translation efforts. When asked for refreshing drinks in Japanese, it displayed corresponding menu items such as beer or carbonated beverages on the screen. This level of usability makes it possible for non-Korean speakers or those unfamiliar with Korean to use the system without any issues.

The role of MZZZ doesn't stop at taking orders within the table order system. It is also integrated into the dashboard, which provides operational information for the store owners. If MZZZ within the table order system plays the role of a waiter, then MZZZ within the store dashboard acts as an expert in store operations.

In the dashboard of another branch of Enshop operated by Next Payments, when asked, "Can you suggest new menu items for our main customers, teenagers?" MZZZ advised adding new types of fruit lattes and chocolate drinks, based on the high sales volume of strawberry lattes and chocolate lattes among teenagers.

Such responses are possible because MZZZ can learn and utilize data from both inside and outside the store gathered in the dashboard. The dashboard collects demographic information such as sales, sales volume, and demographic data of customers collected by AIoT devices in the store. External data such as weather, major events, and event schedules that may affect the store can also be integrated into the dashboard. Franchise headquarters can also use MZZZ as a data analyst role that encompasses data from all franchise stores.

Furthermore, small business owners can receive consultations in specialized fields such as taxation and accounting related to store operations. By providing professional advice to small business owners who find it difficult to access expertise or are burdened by costs, it contributes to narrowing the gap.

Next Payments plans to expand the deployment of MZZZ to various areas throughout the store, including kiosks, digital signage, serving robots, and more in the future. They intend to implement features such as automatically selecting appropriate promotional content for signage based on customer analysis data and implementing AI serving robots capable of various customer service tasks beyond serving. Next Payments has already completed the development of most functionalities, including automatic ordering of store supplies and formulating marketing strategies through MZZZ.

Furthermore, Next Payments announced its plan to register MZZZ in the technology pool for small business smart store technology dissemination projects by the Small Enterprise Market Promotion Agency this year.

Next Payments is stepping up to the challenge of collaboration with OpenAI, leveraging MZZZ. From March 12th, they will visit the OpenAI headquarters in San Francisco to present their retail tech vision using generative AI. Previously, Next Payments was selected as one of the candidates for collaboration with OpenAI from among 14 potential partners at the "K-Startup & OpenAI Matching Day" in December last year. This upcoming visit to OpenAI is part of the process to finalize their collaboration partner.

Ji Kwang-cheol, the CEO of Next Payments, stated, "Having facilitated the digital transformation (DX) of small businesses with smart store solutions, Next Payments now aims to lead the artificial intelligence transformation (AX)." He added, "Through MZZZ, we will bridge the digital gap and contribute to AI benefiting humanity widely, paving the way for precedent."
